Latency and distance
Distance is the hardest emotional correction in contact talk. Even a nearby target like Proxima Centauri turns communication into a multi-year back-and-forth at minimum.
Contact ProtocolsConcept
Most realistic interstellar exchanges are radically slow
It changes what a sensible experiment looks like and rules out many pop-culture assumptions.
Key points
Latency makes conversation feel more like archival exchange than chat.
Target selection matters enormously.
A signaling experiment should be designed with patience, not drama, in mind.
